We’re not going to pull any punches here. Roughneck jobs are going to be a lot of hard work. But when you are looking to get a job working on an oil drilling crew, there’s no better place to start.

Sure you can always start out as even a roustabout. But nowadays even people who have never stepped foot on a drilling floor can learn the skills to start out right as a roughneck.

Start working offshore or work on land first?

Working offshore can be a little different than working on land. The actual job you will do as a roughneck is the same though. You’ll be in charge of grabbing the pipes, using the tongs, and making or breaking the connections.

The big difference is that when you are working as an offshore roustabout you’re having to do it all the oil platform – no going home or to the hotel at night. Because it is a little different – but is it ever exciting – finding offshore roughneck jobs when you are just starting out totally green is a little harder than working onshore.

That’s why of all the entry level offshore jobs that people are looking for, roughneck is definitely at the top.

Duties and Requirements for Offshore Roughneck Jobs

A lot of being a roughneck is more about character than it is knowledge when you’re starting out. In fact there are many schools that can teach you how to be a roughneck. But no one is going to teach you how to be a good worker unless you want to be.

You need to be dependable, show up for work, honest, able to take orders, and being as strong as an ox sure won’t hurt!

Once you’re hired as a roughneck will be working on the dril floor. You’ll take orders from the driller about what to do. You’ll need to help set up and tear down things, keep the rig as clean as possible, and primarily help trip the pipe in and out of the hole.

Roughneck job salary

One of the real nice things about offshore roughnecks is that they make more than a land based roughneck. Of course it’s hard work out on an oil platform, but the money is good for all offshore jobs. Clearing $50,000 a year is definitely possible. What’s even better is you will only work six months out of the year. That’s a good enough reason right there to get started.

Companies With The Most Roughneck Jobs

The easiest way to get started as a roughneck is to get hired at one of the offshore drilling and production contract companies. These are the companies that actually do the day to day drilling operations for a company like Exxon.

Some of these you might’ve heard of like Transocean or Diamond. Others are much smaller, and can be found by looking in some of the key areas like Louisiana or Houston.
