While the state is not as well known for its oil industry as Texas is, there are still some opportunities for offshore jobs in Mississippi.
The main reason for this is a Mississippi only has 44 miles of coastline. Compare this to Louisiana’s 397 miles of coastline and you’ll see there simply more offshore job opportunities in Louisiana. But don’t let this hold you back from trying to find a job in one of the most exciting and well paying industries in the nation.
One important thing about Mississippi is that the majority of offshore pipelines to the state are for natural gas. Also, on land, Mississippi’s infrastructure has 12 major natural gas pipelines.
Offshore, once you get about 50 or 60 miles out in the gulf, the Mississippi Canyon is an important leasing area. It’s not as active as an area as some of the leases around Texas and Louisiana but there are still many jobs available.
There are several major energy companies with regional headquarters in Mississippi like Ensco, Texaco, Chevron, and Exxon. You can always try contacting them correctly, but the majority of their offshore oil and gas exploration is done with subcontractors.
One thing that Mississippi does have going for it is a good offshore support industry. The Chevron Pascagoula Refinery and the Amoco Gas Processing Facility are located in Mississippi to handle the large amounts of petroleum.
If you are interest in working at a job like this, go down to Pascagoula in person and ask around. The Chevron the facility is actually one of the largest oil refineries in America.
Another offshore support role that Mississippi plays is with the helicopter and rig service industry.
But if you’re truly looking for offshore jobs in Mississippi, your best bet is going to be start contacting the regional headquarters in the area. If you don’t mind it a little bit of a drive, there are several Louisiana based offshore hubs nearby like New Orleans and Venice.
